Review – 50 Years of Beatlemania
Is there anybody going to listen to my story, all about the band who came to play? Transporting the lively audience back to the toe-tapping times of their youth, Let it be Beatles tribute band performed a musical medley that was both, entertaining and engaging. An experienced and well rehearsed band, having performed tributes since 1999, for two hours this fab four covered a number of the popular Rock ‘n’ roll songs and ballads from 1964 onwards.
Notably, they excluded most of the work from arguably The Beatles’ most creative period 1966-1968. The White Album, Sgt. Pepper’s and Abbey Road did not make their way onto the setlist, however it would’ve been difficult to incorporate this musical genre into the evening’s repertoire. It simply wasn’t a night for the Walrus. It was a night however for displays of virtuosity. The lead guitarist looking more Clapton than Lennon was particularly impressive. The main vocalist who tried to unite the band brought enthusiasm and his invitations for audience participation were well received.
Accompanying varied film footage taken from BBC recordings, The Ed Sullivan Show, The Beatles’ first trip to Hamburg, and the fitting 1964 Adelaide visit, really helped to remind the audience of the infectious Beatlemania hysteria that gripped the world. Many of those present on the night, still living with this 1960’s condition and wishfully pretending they were at The Cavern in Liverpool, twisted and shouted their way to the stage which added to the evening’s euphoria. For those wanting to experience A Day in the Life of an era that so strongly influenced our culture, go along to this.
