The Barons of Tang [Australia]
IMAGINE if a rockabilly band were given a random assortment of instruments and forced to create the soundtrack to a gypsy cartoon, and you have The Barons of Tang. You’d think these guys had emerged from some failed Eastern European microstate, but they are actually one of the homegrown talents featuring at Womad this year.
With everything from saxophones to piano accordians to banjos, The Barons of Tang spew out a unique sound that jumps from schmalzty to frantic. The stage at times resembles an ants nest under attack as the crowd of band members zip around twirling their instruments and lurching to the music. The highlight of day 1 of Womad, they’ll be back for more on Sunday, so check them out.
