You’d kinda hope that if you flew four comedians to Australia all the way from the Arctic, you’d give them a stage with some aircon so they don’t melt in the 40 degree heat.
The Yukon Gold Comics were a little lethargic and maybe even a little lazy, some resorting to dick jokes. Lots of people like dick jokes. I’m not a big fan of dick jokes.
Thankfully the two female performers in the four-person troupe managed to stay away from male genitalia. Jenny Hamilton was clever and sharp, despite the sunburn and apparent dizziness (again, not a great idea to take Canadians to the beach in 40 degree weather). She did however, use the situation to her advantage and had me chuckling at some of her more devilish jokes.
Claire Ness, who dabbles in more character-based comedy, was also hilarious – particularly as Ashleigh – a blonde 20-something, whose self-defence demonstration actually made me wee my pants a little.
The show lacked a little cohesion and I struggled to understand how everything fitted together – apart from the fact that the troupe was from Yukon. But, if you’re keen to check out the Tuxedo Cat venue and see some comedy for comedy’s sake – ‘A Grizzly Took My Bébé’ ticks those boxes. The Yukon Gold comics left me feeling somewhat dissatisfied, but not disappointed.
