This was a delightful piece of whimsy and a wonderful showcase of various styles of belly dancing. Congratulations to the Belly Dance Art Academy. Ladies of varying shapes, sizes and age, took to the stage with great aplomb. I would suggest for those considering taking up some form of dance as exercise that this might be answer. As presented tonight, belly dancing is sometimes fun, sometimes sensual and always elegant.
I was a little less happy with the Cinderella story. It didn’t always seem to fit with the dances although I applaud the intent. Perhaps a touch of ‘this dance is an expression of the wicked stepmother’s feelings’ in the narration? There were some seriously lovely moments, the Isis Wings and Fan Veil dances in particular. Belly dancing seems to be about isolations, as evidenced by the eye-popping dances where swords are balanced on heads and yet… they keep dancing! Beautiful costumes, good choice of music and nice variations in the choreography made for a highly entertaining evening. I hope the Academy does something similar in the future, just a touch more blending of story and dance and this will be a winner.
