Womad – Alim Qasimov Ensemble
With an International Music Council-UNESCO Music Prize to his name and an appearance in an, erm, Eurovision song contest final to his name, Azerbaijani musician Alim Qasimov has quite the career.
Considered one of the foremost mugam singers in Azerbaijan, he and his ensemble offered up a somewhat dreamlike experience with searing vocal crescendos and low troughs of sombre introspection.
Might be too po-faced for some though, and requires patience.
