Review – Wau Wau Sisters: Death Threats (and other forms of flattery)
When an act receives death threats from religious fundamentalists they’ve got to be worth a look in, right? In the case of the Wau Wau Sisters, the answer is a resounding Hell Yes!
These sisters from the US Bible Belt really love Jesus, and each other. They only want to spread around His good, er, word. And what’s wrong with a bit of nudity while they do it? A lot, according to one heavy breather in Queensland, who promised to turn their award-winning Brisbane Festival show The Last Supper into a bloodbath. So this year the sisters are sharing their experience, our drinks, and some saliva.
The Wau Waus include some choice acts from their last show, so that new fans may understand the basis of the heinous offence they caused. I guess I can see why catholic school girls dry humping Jesus portraits might not go down too well with the religious community. All of the questionable taste is pretty damn funny, though, and these lovely ladies have comic ability in spades. The show belts along without a chance to even whisper a Hail Mary in between shaking with laughter and getting co-opted into the act.
With a mix of homoerotic acrobatics, storytelling, songs and bullet dodging, the Wau Wau sisters display their irreverent wit as well as their gold-spangled athletic bodies. The most impressive act in this self-proclaimed ‘Cirque de T&A’ is on the double trapeze. The sisters dazzle their gasping audience with impressive spins and catches, entirely in lascivious character.
If you like a bit of action, sit in the aisle and get ready for one hell of a ride. You won’t regret it. Yeeeha!
