Review – The Beautiful & the Damned
Who is Miss Fortune? She is an enigma, a fetishised figment of our collective imaginations. She is everywhere and nowhere, and from there she presents to us The Beautiful and the Damned. The hostess, Adelaide’s own Kris del Vayze, star of Drags Aloud, will take you roughly by the hand and rip you through her tawdry underworld where Medusa and the Girl in the Red Shoes meet oriental butterflies, sugary brides and music box ballerinas. With nipple tassels.
Sarina del Fuego, Raven Noir, Doll.I.Am, Leopard Lass and Silk Desire want to tease you. They want to titillate and please you. And they do. Elegant and erotic, each performance is unique. Sarina del Fuego is cheeky; her eyes catch and snare you and then she drags and blows and engulfs you in a hazy plume of smoke. Raven Noir, tattooed and voluptuous, her hips shimmering in exquisite costumes, hypnotises as Medusa. Be careful, she really will turn you to stone (pun intended). Petite Doll.I.Am, with big bright eyes, transforms from pastels and virgin white, to Devil’s red and horned, as she taps her way out of the Red Shoes. And Silk Desire ties herself in knots as she emerges from her shimmering cocoon. With nipple tassels.
Kris del Vayze is as good with her witty banter as she is with her poetic and lyrical overtures. With more costume changes than a Britney concert, she is the glue that holds the show together. And the Al Amir venue is simple and intimate. It may not have the seedy red light vibe of an underground lounge, but it does have a bar, black curtains, and really, with ladies as mesmerising as these, who needs anything else? The show is not the faint hearted. Or for those who do not like a face full of boobs, and speaking as a straight girl, who does not like a face full of boobs? Unfortunately Adelaide’s own Leopard Lass did not dance for me this time. I may just have to return. Nipple Tassels.
