Review – A Simple Space
Show Info
I never really thought it possible that standing on someone’s head could be a beautiful thing. However, having seen the Gravity & Other Myths show A Simple Space, I can say that I have been proven totally and utterly wrong.
As the eight performers walked onto the empty stage, plain-dressed and with skipping ropes in hand, I must admit that I was less than optimistic about what was to come. But as soon as they had warmed the audience up – and themselves – with a quick game of strip jump-rope (yes it’s exactly what it a sounds like) they wasted no time in setting out to perform stunts that left the audience in a confused state of something between amazement and terror. From back flip competitions to elaborate human stepping stones and even a human percussion piece, A Simple Space strips its circus genre down to the very bones, leaving the audience to focus on the real main attraction – the absolute skill of the performers.
Although there is really no arguing the talent of Gravity and Other Myths, that’s not to say that the show was completely flawless. There were a few stunts that didn’t quite go to plan. But if anything this added to the overall experience by reminding the audience that these aren’t super human space acrobats, but instead just ordinary people doing truly extraordinary things. While they may not have had much in the way of time or space, not an inch of the stage or minute of the show was wasted, juxtaposing the simplistic setting against the intricate performance. To keep with the theme and put it simply, this is a show worth seeing.
