Review – In The Mood
Swing and Tonic are a sharp gang of groovers that play big band hits, The Elliot Sisters are three cuties with pipes of gold, and together they perform staples of the Andrew Sisters with style and flair, including “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree” and “Rum and Coca-Cola”.
The audience were clearly connoisseurs of old rock and lindy hop. Extra entertainment was provided by couples, who were dressed to the nines, displaying their forties-style dancing prowess. It was a shame, however, that there was limited space for these hipsters to get their boogie woogie on.
As this was a dinner show prepare to buckle up for a big night. While the girls can clearly sing, and the band can play, if they were to try this format again I would recommend collaborating with a MC for the evening – someone from the cabaret world who could channel the Eddie Sparks character from For the Boys. For me, this addition would complete the illusion of being at a wartime era event.
However, lucky for all of us, the girls are back with the band for Shoo Shoo Baby: A Tribute to the Sisters of Swing, but don’t take my word for it – Fringe ambassador, Katie Noonan, has selected these shows as one of her picks for the Fringe. Out of the two remaining shows, one has already sold out, so if swing is your thing be quick.
