REVIEW – LANA SCHWARCZ: LOVE MONSTER
Lana Schwarcz is a quirky awkward redhead with relationship issues. Namely, she isn’t in one. It’s a standard piece for comics, their inability to find and hold down love. Schwarcz’s show is yet another example of why hapless Zooey Deschanel types are so unsuccessful in real life. She tries to emulate that cheery upbeat lonely tone, but her jokes work best when she slips into her natural sardonic voice.
It’s only mildly surprising when Schwarcz lifts up her skirts to reveal a one eyed horned puppet – the titular Love Monster. It’s a clunky relationship, both in the content of the jokes and onstage. Schwarcz is no ventriloquist and doesn’t try to be. The transitions between the monster and her solo material are not smooth, and the photo book asides involve contrite set ups that are unbelievable. The audience interaction is somewhat stilted and when one of her jokes does land Schwarcz milks it until it falls over. She loves us, she assures the audience. Despite the rehashing of standard premises her likable character shines through. It’s not the best $18 you’ll spend this festival, but it does tackle a relatable theme in a reasonably charming way.
Love Monster is on at the Imperial Hotel on the 5th and 6th of April at 6pm, then the 12th and 19th of April at 4pm.
‘Female comics’ I think you mean ‘comics’.
Indeed we do, and the fix has been made. Thanks for the alert.
