Lisa-Marie Ryan’s new cabaret show Mylie’s Relationship Status is Complicated: A Facebook Romance is a sometimes funny and always honest look at Generation Facebook. It delves into how we live online versus how we live in real life, the importance of updating your relationship status and the art of Facebook stalking, among other things. Lisa-Marie interjects her story with pop songs that have been adapted to suit the theme. She has a stunning voice, but it felt at times like she lacked control over it. Lisa-Marie has a very strong presence. She’s eccentric yet relatable. However, I felt that the show was a little haphazard and not as coherent as it could’ve been.
It’s a great idea to do a show about Facebook; there is a lot of humour in the way we conduct ourselves online and how this leaks into our real life. But maybe it would have hit the mark a bit more if she extended the theme to include all social media or maybe focus more on online dating instead of just Facebook. It’s not that there isn’t enough material for a full show, it’s just that the show somehow failed to represent anything good about that world and the people in it.
I believe Lisa-Marie Ryan is going to be a huge star one day. She really does have a beautiful voice, a unique and funny way of looking at the world, and things to say that will reach people in a deep and real way. I just don’t feel she accomplished that with this particular show.
