Review – The Motown Story
In a one night only show, Motown Connection brought hits from the golden age of 1959 – 1971 to The Gov, performing to a sell out crowd. The Motown Story was a combination of music and history and the audience were treated to soulful classics from the band who didn’t miss a beat.
The show opened with a presentation about the beginnings of the Motown era featuring black and white photos of the greats, and a voiceover informing the crowd about how the legends came to be so.
At conclusion of the presentation, the band entered the stage and the show truly began. They performed hit after hit from the likes of The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding, just to name a few.
By the third song in, the dance floor had started and did not stop until the final encore. The beginning of each new track brought a collective scream from the audience and seemed to erupt everyone’s inner ‘woo-girl’.
There were a couple of moments of questionable authenticity. One being a historical fact being quoted from Wikipedia and both of the female leads were wearing flapper dresses – originating from an era far earlier than Motown.
Despite these minor details, the crowd were having a fabulous time. The dance floor was spread from front and centre of the stage, all the way to the back of the beer garden. Drinks were flowing and people were singing along to every hit.
Motown Connection are the perfect party band and their performance was fantastic. The audience were delighted to be taken on a journey through an era in which the songs will be forever loved and loved by all ages.
