DANY Boon‘s (Joyeux Noel) Nothing to Declare is a delight to watch, especially if you know how much the two European neighbours hate each other.
Benoît Poelvoorde gives us the hilarious Ruben Vandavoorde, a Belgium customs officer who’s disdain for the French is probably only matched by his hatred of drug smugglers. As comic-fate would have it, the newly formed Eurozone needs a unified customs team and Vandavoorde has to team up with Mathais Ducatel (played by Dany Boon himself), who, to add to the hilarity, also happens to be his brother-in-law.
Even though it’s set in the early 90s, the movie has a very ‘vintage’ feel to it. And although some of the jokes are lost in translation, most of them are universally relevant and very very funny.
At times the humour is slightly silly (physical comedy, outlandish expressions, etc), but even those moments are funnier than your average sitcom fare. We think this is one of the funnier comedies at the festival this year and you’ll definitely leave the cinema with a smile on your face.
Heckler recommends this film if you’re looking for a comedy at the festival.
