Riding along on the momentum that is the massive lineup of comedy gigs at the Adelaide Fringe, these South Australian locals do a heaps good job of showing off what the Festival State has to offer in terms of fresh comic talent. Angus Hodge, Chris Knight and Kel Balnaves are all regulars of the local scene as well as award-winning touring comedians in their own right.
It’s a super late show, so they have to work even harder than usual to get laughs out of an audience who have been to one or two other shows in the evening and pretty much just want to go home or have a kebab. But these guys have that something special that it takes to kick off a show with a line other than “How you doin’, Melbourne, alright?” or “What do you do for a living?”. There aren’t too many in-jokes and references to the city of churches, and just the right sprinkling of universal standard fart jokes.
At just $16 (or $10 on Tightarse Tuesdays), it’s also one of the best value variety shows in the whole festival. As someone who admittedly mostly follows the big names in comedy, I love a good showcase for a chance to see someone I wouldn’t have gambled a whole night on; at $5.33ish per comic you can’t go wrong with the Heaps Good SA Showcase.
