10 Quick Qs – Simon Taylor
Simon Taylor is taking time from writing for Jay Leno and Shaun Micallef to hit up the Adelaide Fringe. We spent hours researching the man so we could ask the difficult questions.
1. Describe your show Twitter-style, 140 character or less!
#funny #comedy #lol #wtf #twerk #obama #fitness #hashtag #pleasecomeitwillbesomuchfun
2. Do you feel pressured to be funny at family gatherings?
There is a common understanding in my family that these gathering are not for showing off but for stuffing our faces. I can’t tell jokes when my mouth is full of trifle.
3. Is this your first Adelaide Fringe? If so, what are you most looking forward to? If not, what is your least favourite thing about the festival?
This is my fourth Adelaide Fringe. My least favourite thing is that more of my friends back home in Melbourne don’t come over and see how fun it is. They should quit their “real” jobs and be a part of the festival for a month.
4. What was the most challenging aspect about preparing your show?
Imagine those scenes from Rocky where he is running up the steps and punching frozen meat. My comedy writing technique is pretty much the same as that.
5. If you could be any character in any movie, who and what would it be?
I would be Jules Winnfield (Samuel L Jackson) in Pulp Fiction. I’m totally badass and I love burgers.
6. Who’s your biggest comedic idol?
George Carlin. He’s an old American comic who had a beard. Beards are the best.
7. Is heckling allowed?
If you want me to go all Samuel L Jackson on your ass, sure.
8. What’s your favourite Internet-related guilty indulgence?
I occasionally need to look up David Beckham’s tattoos and remind myself they would never look good on me.
9. What is the biggest accolade you’ve received from one of your shows?
Someone fainted in one of my shows. She later said she was just dehydrated but I like to think the real reason is because she laughed herself into a concussion.
10. What other Fringe show are you most excited to catch up with?
Sam Simmons, Tom Ballard and Demi Lardner because they are comedy gods amongst us mere mortals.
Simon Taylor’s Funny will show from February 14.
